Don't Let the Numbers Scare You
If you have ever stood on a court frozen in fear because you didn't know if you were a "1" or a "2", this guide is for you. Scoring is the #1 barrier to entry for new players. By the end of this article, you will be the person correcting others on the court.
Part 1: Standard Doubles Scoring (The 95%)
Most games you play will use this format. You call three numbers before every serve.
[Server Team Score] - [Opposing Team Score] - [Server Number]The "Server Number" Concept
In tennis, you serve for the whole game. In pickleball, both partners get a chance to serve before the ball goes to the other team (Side Out).
- Server 1: The first partner to serve.
- Server 2: The second partner to serve.
The Flow of a Frame
- 1Server 1 Serves.
- If they win: They switch sides with their partner. Score goes up by 1. Keep serving.
- If they lose: No point. Ball goes to Server 2. (Call "Second Serve").
- 1Server 2 Serves.
- If they win: Switch sides. Point. Keep serving.
- If they lose: No point. SIDE OUT. Ball goes to the other team.
The "First Serve" Exception (0-0-2)
To prevent the first team from having an unfair advantage, the game starts with a handicap. The very first team only gets one server. So, the first player calls: "Zero - Zero - Two" (or "Start"). If they lose the point, it is an immediate Side Out.
Positioning Cheat Sheet
- Even Score (0, 2, 4...): Player A (Started on Right) should be on the Right.
- Odd Score (1, 3, 5...): Player A should be on the Left.
- If you are standing in the wrong spot, you have messed up the rotation!
Part 2: Singles Scoring (Simple)
Singles is easier. There are only two numbers.
[Server Score] - [Receiver Score]The Rule
- If your score is Even, serve from the Right.
- If your score is Odd, serve from the Left.
- There is no "Server 2." If you lose the point, it's a side out.
Part 3: Rally Scoring (The Future?)
You might see "Rally Scoring" in some leagues or MLP (Major League Pickleball) events.
- The Rule: A point is scored on every rally, regardless of who served.
- The Vibe: Much faster games.
- The Serve: Teams usually "freeze" serving rights (Player A always serves from right, B from left).
- Note: Most rec play does NOT use this yet.
Part 4: Edge Cases and FAQs
"What if I call the wrong score?"
- Technically, if you call the wrong score and serve, it is a fault if the opponent stops play to correct you before the return.
- Etiquette: Just correct it and re-serve. Don't be a jerk.
"What if we forget the score?"
- Trace back the service side.
- "We are on the Right side... so our score must be even."
"Who serves first in the next game?"
- Usually the loser of the previous game serves first (or they can choose side).
Summary Table
| Format | Numbers Called | Scoring | Serving |
|---|---|---|---|
| Doubles | 3 (e.g., 5-3-2) | Serve Only | Both partners serve |
| Singles | 2 (e.g., 5-3) | Serve Only | Side Out immediately |
| Rally | 2 or 3 | Every Point | Varies |
